Amish Baked Custard
Ingredients:
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 3/4 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional, for garnish)
- A pinch of salt
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare the Custard Mixture:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until well combined.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
- Strain the Mixture:
- For a smoother texture, strain the custard mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into another bowl to remove any egg solids.
- Pour into Baking Dish:
- Pour the custard mixture into a 1.5-quart or 2-quart baking dish.
- Prepare the Water Bath:
- Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan or roasting pan.
- Carefully pour hot water into the larger pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard dish. This water bath helps cook the custard evenly.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve:
- Remove the custard from the oven and carefully lift it out of the water bath.
- Let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
- Garnish with a sprinkle of ground nutmeg if desired.
Optional Serving Suggestions:
- Serve the custard plain, or with a dollop of whipped cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for added sweetness.
This Amish Baked Custard is a timeless dessert that’s both simple and satisfying, with a creamy texture that’s hard to resist!
