Beef Pasties

Ingredients:

For the Pastry:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 4-5 tbsp cold water

For the Filling:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium potato, peeled and diced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup diced carrot (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Equipment:

  • Mixing bowls
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Make the Pastry:
  • In a bowl, combine 2 cups flour and 1/4 tsp salt. Add cold butter and mix until crumbly. Gradually add cold water until a dough forms. Wrap in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.
  1. Prepare the Filling:
  • In a skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess fat. Add diced potato, onion, carrot, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for about 10 minutes until the vegetables soften.
  1. Preheat the Oven:
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  1. Roll Out the Pastry:
  • On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles (about 6 inches in diameter).
  1. Fill the Pasties:
  • Place a spoonful of filling on one half of each circle. Brush edges with water, fold over, and seal by crimping with a fork.
  1. Brush and Bake:
  • Place pasties on the baking sheet. Beat the egg and brush the tops. Cut a small slit in each for steam to escape. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  1. Serve:
  • Let cool slightly before enjoying your homemade beef pasties!

Tips for Success:

  • Experiment: Feel free to add your favorite herbs or spices to the filling.
  • Storage: Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days or freeze for later.

Enjoy your first batch of beef pasties! They’re a hearty and delicious treat!
