Ingredients
- Butter (unsalted): 1 cup (2 sticks)
- Brown sugar (lightly packed): 1 cup
- Salt: ¼ teaspoon
- Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: 1½ cups
- Crushed nuts (optional, like almonds or pecans): ½ cup
Instructions
- Prepare a Baking Sheet:
- Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or grease it lightly.
- Make the Toffee Base:
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the brown sugar and salt, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a boil.
- Boil for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens slightly.
- Add Vanilla:
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Be careful as it might bubble up.
- Spread in the Pan:
- Pour the toffee mixture evenly into the prepared pan and spread it out with a spatula.
- Melt the Chocolate:
- Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Wait 1-2 minutes for them to soften, then spread the chocolate into an even layer using a spatula or knife.
- Add Toppings (Optional):
- Sprinkle crushed nuts on top if desired for added texture and flavor.
- Chill:
- Let the candy cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for 1-2 hours until completely set.
- Break into Squares:
- Remove the toffee from the pan and break or cut it into squares or shards.
