Easy Molasses Buns

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup warm water (110°F or 45°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter (plus extra for brushing)
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
  • In a small bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, until the mixture is frothy.
  1. Prepare the Dough:
  • In a large bowl, mix together the molasses, granulated sugar, melted butter, and egg.
  • Add the yeast mixture to this bowl and stir until well combined.
  • Gradually add 3 1/2 cups of flour, salt, and cinnamon (if using), mixing until a dough forms. You may need to add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  1. Knead the Dough:
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  1. Shape the Buns:
  • Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
  • Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
  • Place the dough balls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish or on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  1. Second Rise:
  • Cover the shaped buns with a cloth and let them rise for about 30 minutes, or until puffy.
  1. Bake:
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  1. Finish:
  • Brush the tops of the buns with melted butter right after they come out of the oven for a soft, flavorful crust.
  1. Serve:
  • Let the buns cool slightly before serving.
