Ham and Cheese Sticks
Ingredients:
- 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed, if frozen)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup diced ham (pre-cooked)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- 1 tablespoon fresh chives or parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Prepare the Puff Pastry:
- Unroll the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. If it’s too sticky, you can lightly flour the top of the pastry as well.
- If using, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard over the pastry for extra flavor.
- Add Ham and Cheese:
- Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over one half of the puff pastry. Top with the diced ham. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper if desired.
- Fold the other half of the puff pastry over the cheese and ham, creating a sandwich-like shape. Press the edges gently to seal.
- Cut and Brush:
- Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into strips about 1-inch wide.
- Place the strips on the prepared baking sheet, spaced slightly apart. Brush the tops with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown, and the cheese is melted.
- Garnish and Serve:
- If desired, sprinkle with fresh chives or parsley after baking for a touch of color and flavor.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
Tips:
- Variations: You can use different cheeses like mozzarella or Swiss, or add other ingredients like sautéed onions or bell peppers for added flavor.
- Make Ahead: Assemble the sticks ahead of time, place them on a baking sheet, and freeze until solid. Then transfer to a zip-top bag and keep frozen until ready to bake.
