Homemade Churros Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Churros:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

For the Chocolate Dipping Sauce (Optional):

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Churro Dough:
  • In a medium saucepan, combine water, sugar, salt, and butter. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until the butter is melted.
  • Remove from heat and add the flour all at once, stirring quickly with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
  • Allow the dough to cool slightly, about 5 minutes. Then, add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until the dough is smooth and glossy.
  1. Prepare the Oil for Frying:
  • Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pan or heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is at the right temperature.
  1. Pipe the Churros:
  • Transfer the churro dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (like a 1M or 2D tip).
  • Carefully pipe strips of dough, about 4-6 inches long, directly into the hot oil. Use scissors to cut the dough from the piping bag. Fry a few churros at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  1. Fry the Churros:
  • Fry the churros until they are golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  1. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar:
  • In a shallow dish, combine the sugar and cinnamon.
  • While the churros are still warm, roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until well coated.
  1. Prepare the Chocolate Dipping Sauce (Optional):
  • In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it begins to simmer.
  • Remove from heat and add the chopped chocolate and corn syrup. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes, then stir until smooth and glossy.
  1. Serve:
  • Serve the churros warm with the chocolate dipping sauce on the side, if using.

Enjoy your homemade churros—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and irresistibly sweet!
