Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Combine Ingredients:
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk and granulated sugar. Stir to combine.
  1. Heat Mixture:
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring constantly. Do not let it boil.
  1. Simmer:
  • Once the mixture reaches a simmer, reduce the heat to low. Continue to cook and stir frequently for about 30-40 minutes. The mixture should reduce by about half and thicken to a syrupy consistency.
  1. Add Butter:
  • Once the mixture has thickened, remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the unsalted butter until fully melted and combined.
  1. Optional Vanilla:
  • If using vanilla extract, stir it in now.
  1. Cool and Store:
  • Allow the sweetened condensed milk to cool to room temperature. It will continue to thicken slightly as it cools.
  • Transfer to a clean jar or airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

This homemade sweetened condensed milk is perfect for baking, desserts, and sweetening your coffee or tea!
