Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, plus more for brushing
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing after baking)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes, until frothy.
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour and salt. In a saucepan, heat the milk and 1/4 cup of butter until melted. Let it cool slightly, then add the milk mixture and the egg to the flour mixture.
- Combine:
- Add the activated yeast to the bowl and stir until combined. Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the Dough:
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Rolls:
- Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Place the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Second Rise:
- Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for about 30–45 minutes, or until puffy.
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake:
- Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and immediately brush with melted butter.
- Serve:
- Let the rolls cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm!
Tips
- For an even softer texture, you can add an additional tablespoon of butter to the dough.
- These rolls are perfect for dinner, sandwiches, or just with a bit of jam!
