Old-Fashioned Soft and Buttery Yeast Rolls

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, plus more for brushing
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing after baking)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast:
  • In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes, until frothy.
  1. Prepare the Dough:
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour and salt. In a saucepan, heat the milk and 1/4 cup of butter until melted. Let it cool slightly, then add the milk mixture and the egg to the flour mixture.
  1. Combine:
  • Add the activated yeast to the bowl and stir until combined. Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  1. Knead the Dough:
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  1. First Rise:
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  1. Shape the Rolls:
  • Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Place the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  1. Second Rise:
  • Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for about 30–45 minutes, or until puffy.
  1. Preheat the Oven:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  1. Bake:
  • Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and immediately brush with melted butter.
  1. Serve:
    • Let the rolls cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm!

Tips

  • For an even softer texture, you can add an additional tablespoon of butter to the dough.
  • These rolls are perfect for dinner, sandwiches, or just with a bit of jam!

Enjoy your delicious homemade yeast rolls!
