Texas Toast Sloppy Joes: A Southern Twist

Ingredients

  • For the Sloppy Joe filling:
  • 1 lb ground beef (or turkey)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For assembly:
  • 4 slices of Texas toast
  • Butter (for toasting)
  • Shredded cheese (optional)
  • Pickles or coleslaw (optional toppings)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling:
  • In a skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess fat.
  • Add diced onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until softened.
  • Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 10 minutes until thickened.
  1. Toast the bread:
  • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Spread butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast.
  • Place the slices butter-side down in the skillet. Cook until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  1. Assemble:
  • Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the unbuttered side of two slices of Texas toast.
  • Top with shredded cheese if desired, then place the other slices of toast on top, buttered side up.
  1. Serve:
  • You can grill the sandwich for a minute or two on each side for extra crispiness.
  • Cut in half and serve with pickles or coleslaw on the side.
