The Very Best Salisbury Steak

Tender beef patties smothered in a rich, savory gravy, perfect for a hearty meal with mashed potatoes or steamed veggies.

Ingredients:

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties:
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until everything is evenly combined.
  • Form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  1. Cook the Patties:
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  1. Make the Gravy:
  • In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 5-7 minutes until they become soft and slightly caramelized.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  • Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, dried thyme (if using), and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Bring the gravy to a simmer and let it thicken for 3-4 minutes.
  1. Return Patties to the Pan:
  • Place the cooked Salisbury steak patties back into the skillet, spooning the gravy over the top. Let them simmer in the gravy for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  1. Serve:
  • Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, with the gravy generously spooned over the top. Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.

Enjoy!
