The Very Best Salisbury Steak
Tender beef patties smothered in a rich, savory gravy, perfect for a hearty meal with mashed potatoes or steamed veggies.
Ingredients:
For the Salisbury Steaks:
- 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
For the Gravy:
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until everything is evenly combined.
- Form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Cook the Patties:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
- Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 5-7 minutes until they become soft and slightly caramelized.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, dried thyme (if using), and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Bring the gravy to a simmer and let it thicken for 3-4 minutes.
- Return Patties to the Pan:
- Place the cooked Salisbury steak patties back into the skillet, spooning the gravy over the top. Let them simmer in the gravy for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Serve:
- Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, with the gravy generously spooned over the top. Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
Enjoy!
