Turkish Bread (Pide)

Ingredients:

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Topping (Optional):

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • Sesame seeds or nigella seeds (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
  • In a large bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add the yogurt and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
  • Gradually mix in the flour and salt, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  1. Shape the Bread:
  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a baking sheet or pizza stone in the oven to heat.
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions. Roll each piece into an oval or circular shape, about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Transfer the dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  1. Add the Topping:
  • Whisk the egg yolk and milk together. Brush the mixture over the top of the dough.
  • Sprinkle sesame seeds or nigella seeds on top if desired.
  1. Bake:
  • Bake the bread for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
  1. Serve:
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving. Turkish bread is best enjoyed fresh, with dips like hummus or baba ghanoush, or as a side for soups and stews.

This Turkish bread is soft on the inside with a slightly crisp crust, perfect for all occasions!
