- 2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp sugar
- 2 tsp instant yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Topping (Optional):
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tbsp milk
- Sesame seeds or nigella seeds (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add the yogurt and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
- Gradually mix in the flour and salt, stirring until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Bread:
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a baking sheet or pizza stone in the oven to heat.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions. Roll each piece into an oval or circular shape, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Transfer the dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Add the Topping:
- Whisk the egg yolk and milk together. Brush the mixture over the top of the dough.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds or nigella seeds on top if desired.
- Bake:
- Bake the bread for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
- Serve:
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. Turkish bread is best enjoyed fresh, with dips like hummus or baba ghanoush, or as a side for soups and stews.
