  • 1/2 cup shrimp, peeled and chopped (optional)
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 package wonton wrappers (about 30-40)

For the Soup:

  • 8 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups bok choy or spinach
  • Green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Equipment:

  • Large pot
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon for filling wontons
  • Slotted spoon

Instructions:

  1. Make the Wonton Filling:
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, chopped shrimp (if using), green onions, minced garlic, minced ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
  1. Fill the Wontons:
  • Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of filling into the center.
  • Moisten the edges with a little water, fold the wrapper over to form a triangle, and press to seal. You can also bring the two corners of the triangle together to form a boat shape, sealing them with water.
  1. Prepare the Soup Broth:
  • In a large pot, combine 8 cups of chicken broth, 2 cups water, 2 cloves minced garlic, 1 tbsp minced ginger, 2 tbsp soy sauce, and 1 tbsp sesame oil. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  1. Cook the Wontons:
  • Gently add the wontons to the simmering broth. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until they float to the surface and are cooked through.
  1. Add Vegetables:
  • Once the wontons are cooked, add the bok choy or spinach to the pot. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes until the greens are wilted.
  1. Season and Serve:
  • Taste the broth and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Ladle the soup into bowls, garnishing with sliced green onions.

Tips for Success:

  • Make Ahead: You can prepare the wontons ahead of time and freeze them. Just add them directly to the boiling broth when ready to cook.
  • Custom Fillings: Feel free to mix up the filling with other proteins or add vegetables like chopped mushrooms or carrots.
  • Serving Suggestions: Enjoy the soup on its own or serve it with steamed rice or additional dipping sauces.

Enjoy your homemade wonton soup! It’s sure to warm your heart and satisfy your cravings!
