Southern Fried Cabbage with Bacon and Onion

Southern Fried Cabbage with Bacon and Onion. It’s a delicious, comforting side dish packed with flavor from crispy bacon and tender cabbage.

Ingredients:

  • 1 head cabbage, chopped (about 1-inch pieces)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 5 slices bacon, chopped
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional, for added sweetness)
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cabbage
Cut the cabbage into quarters. Remove any wilted or discolored outer leaves, and cut out the core from each quarter. Chop the cabbage into large, 1-inch pieces.
  2. Cook the Bacon and Onion
In a large, deep skillet or 4-quart pan, cook the chopped bacon and onion over medium heat until the bacon is crisp and the onion is translucent. Remove the bacon and onion with a slotted spoon and transfer to a paper towel to drain, leaving about 1/2 cup of bacon drippings in the pan.
  3. Add the Cabbage
Add the chopped cabbage to the pan with the bacon drippings. Let the cabbage cook without stirring for about 3 minutes, allowing it to brown slightly.
  4. Season and Simmer
Add the water, garlic, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together, cover the pan, and cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
  5. Add Bacon and Serve
Once the cabbage is tender, crumble the cooked bacon into the pan. Stir to combine, and serve the cabbage hot.
