Southern Fried Cabbage with Bacon and Onion. It’s a delicious, comforting side dish packed with flavor from crispy bacon and tender cabbage.
Ingredients:
- 1 head cabbage, chopped (about 1-inch pieces)
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 tsp minced garlic
- 5 slices bacon, chopped
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp sugar (optional, for added sweetness)
- ¼ cup water
Instructions:
- Prepare the Cabbage
Cut the cabbage into quarters. Remove any wilted or discolored outer leaves, and cut out the core from each quarter. Chop the cabbage into large, 1-inch pieces. - Cook the Bacon and Onion
In a large, deep skillet or 4-quart pan, cook the chopped bacon and onion over medium heat until the bacon is crisp and the onion is translucent. Remove the bacon and onion with a slotted spoon and transfer to a paper towel to drain, leaving about 1/2 cup of bacon drippings in the pan. - Add the Cabbage
Add the chopped cabbage to the pan with the bacon drippings. Let the cabbage cook without stirring for about 3 minutes, allowing it to brown slightly. - Season and Simmer
Add the water, garlic, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together, cover the pan, and cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender. - Add Bacon and Serve
Once the cabbage is tender, crumble the cooked bacon into the pan. Stir to combine, and serve the cabbage hot.
