Poppy Seed Rolls

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 2 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¾ cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

For the Poppy Seed Filling:

  • ¾ cup poppy seeds
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

For the Egg Wash:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dough:

  • In a small bowl, mix the yeast, warm milk, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and the remaining sugar. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

2. Prepare the Poppy Seed Filling:

  • In a saucepan, combine the poppy seeds, sugar, honey, milk, and butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until the mixture thickens (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract, if using. Let it cool.

3. Shape the Rolls:

  • Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle (about 12×10 inches).
  • Spread the poppy seed filling evenly over the dough.
  • Roll the dough tightly into a log starting from the long edge. Slice into 1-inch rolls.

4. Proof the Rolls:

  • Place the rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet or in a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.

5. Bake:

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

6. Serve:

  • Let the rolls cool slightly before serving. They’re delicious as is or with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of icing for a sweeter version.

Tips:

  • Make-Ahead Option: You can prepare the rolls, cover, and refrigerate them overnight before baking.
  • Customizable Filling: Swap poppy seeds for nuts, cinnamon sugar, or jam for different flavors.

These Poppy Seed Rolls are a delightful way to elevate any meal or snack time—enjoy! 🥖✨
